Careers in the Trades

Start Your Career in the Building Trades

We’re experiencing a moment in history when changes in the manufacturing sector, retirement of an aging skilled trade workforce, and diversification of the regional economy have created a skills shortage. This means there are new opportunities for City residents to launch careers in the building and construction trades – giving them access to family-sustaining jobs with great benefits and skills to literally rebuild and grow our community.

The City of Racine and Mayor Mason believe in your potential! We want to encourage and support adults in the City who are interested in starting family-sustaining careers in the building/construction trades. We know that for too long, people of color and women especially have been underrepresented in the trades, and we are investing to help our residents get the support, education, and training they need to access these jobs.

City of Racine career in the building trades

The City is proud to partner with WRTP/Big Step and the Racine Family YMCA to help our residents complete their FREE pre-apprenticeship training programs. Through WRTP/Big Step’s Roadbuilding Training Program and the Racine Family YMCA’s First Choice Pre-Apprenticeship Program, you can gain the skills and confidence you need to begin a new career with great pay, benefits, and stability in the construction and building trades. AND, for a limited time, the City will give City residents age 18+ who go through one of these FREE training programs a $1,500 City Scholarship to help you pay the bills while you’re being trained! Apply here.

We know that starting training programs requires a lot of time, effort, and sacrifice. To support you in doing this, the City is now offering scholarships of up to $1,500 to residents who enroll in and complete either WRTP/Big Step’s Southeast Wisconsin Roadbuilding Training Program or the Racine YMCA’s First Choice Pre-Apprenticeship Program.

If you live in the City of Racine and are ready to start your career in the building trades, complete this application for a City scholarship and begin your journey
